PRODUCTIVE COMPLEMENTARITY AND COMPETITIVITY IN THE INTEGRATION PROCESS
The search for competitiveness is a key priority for all governments, and therefore, in many countries there are public policy instruments to promote it. These policies are more effective if they are based on reliable indicators and studies which help the decision makers. MercoNet has developed databases on indicators of industrial performance and competitiveness, as well as on competitivity studies and their current policies in the region. At the same time MercoNet is working on a line of research on productive complementation in the Mercosur in order to learn about the current productive complementation situation and opportunities to promote it through common regional policies. Several studies have been undertaken on different production chains and key sectors in Mercosur such as the software and automotive industries.

The stimulation of the production and the use of renewable energies which are less harmful to the environment and less expensive, as is the case of biofuels, has become increasingly important in the public debate and has been given priority in the political agenda.
